4 - Union of Pictures and Literature

In our lives, picture books, or comics, play a usually niche role in terms of developing literary skills and techniques, as the focus on both visual and literary aspects of the medium drives away people who are only focused on one aspect or the other. I however find the merging of both mediums appealing, as it allows for a great storytelling experience, despite the lack of literary analysis that is present in these books. It allows for another visual analysis, which is something that is not focused at all unless you have an interest of analyzing artwork, it allows for another way of  visualizing  a situation and making something out the depiction the cartoonist makes.   One thing that also detracts some from comics is the stigma that possessing such material has on others, as our society views comics as childish and non-academic. I do find it true that most comics are less academic than their picture-less counterparts, on the surface, that is. Comics have a great ...

3 - Civil Disobedience

In  Civil Disobedience , Henry David Thoreau tells his thoughts about his heavy disliking of the government and how see wants to see society ideally run, that is to have a government that does not restrict the freedoms of the people and a government that is enjoyed by the majority of the population. He sees the current American government as an entity acting only for its interests disregarding the people, with the army being “only an arm” of the government, used for enforcing this minority rule.  I do agree with him on some of his stances, mainly due to the condition of the US government at the time. The government did not speak for the majority, as only white men could vote during the time period. There was also the practice of slavery that was going on at the time, which was against the ideals of the American government at the time. Thoreau emphasizes that the voices of the minority should be used to challenge the American system and to not let your voice be assimilate...

2 - The Meaning of Patriotism

There are many ways to display patriotism f o r a country, and the idea can be displayed in many ways due to your definition of  helping  your mother country. One such ideal is to have a successful living in your c oun try and contributing  its  economy as much as possible. Another way of showing patriotism is by displaying symbols of your home as much as possi ble to show gratitude of your life and the privileges you gain from your land.   Sarah Vowell’s view of patriotism is one of fulfilling the original ideas of the government, in which one should be openly able to discuss and criti que the American government . This is reflected in her relationship with her parents , as she  has a strong bond with them despite thier differing views on politics and religion. She also takes pride in her country as the birthplace of her idols and favorite  artists. When she was at the  Yugoslavian debate, she disliked the general denouncement of national...

1 - The History Teacher

“When does protection become lying?”   One of the many dilemmas of being a teacher is to balance the ideas of  teaching knowledge to students and teaching   children  good manners in the classroom.   The point of school is indeed to teach education to students to prepare them for adulthood, but it is also to prepare them for interaction with superiors and peers, and how to behave and  excel in the environment. The text that this question is referring to a poem titled  The History Teacher ,  the story detailing a teacher that teachers his  students'  alternative facts to shield them from innocence. If  referral to the story, then I think the teacher is being too protective  in his teachings, as the kids will grow up to believe his facts at such a young age. The story also shows that his protection does an  insufficient job, as the students continue to behave rudely to each other while the teacher returns to his...
