5 - Lens and Interpretation

One thing about the lens of critique is that, despite being very different from each other in the subject that they are analyzing, they are still able to reach a conclusion on what the main lesson is and what to take away from it, which I did not think was possible in the context of the stories we analyzed

The more I think about it, however, the more it made sense to me, in that every lens is like someone interpreting it differently. A big part of human interaction is interpretation, which is something we do every day in order to take some judgment from it. It is very much the same when it comes to literature, except you are focusing on a specific character of a story rather than analyzing the whole.

A non-literary example of this is any argument or disagreement that can take place, as one person can interpret it differently when they focus on the principles that are more important to them. Someone may dismiss criticism because, in their lens, any comment that is not praise is aggression. Lens of critique, while not being that petty, does have their own personalities and thoughts in a way.

In the context of The Story of an Hour, a lens may view the story as someone disrespecting their husband while another lens may see it as a sort of mortal liberation. It is ultimately up to the reader to accept this criticism though, as they may see a certain lens as more informative, but there really can never be an incorrect analysis if it is interpretation.
